Vein Removal What are thread veins?
Thread veins are tiny veins that appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and legs. Normally, the tiny veins in the skin are invisible, but in some people they expand and show through the skin.
Small thread veins are red, but larger ones can appear more purple in colour. Thread veins are commonly known as:
•Spider Veins
•Broken Veins (inaccurate as they are not actually broken!)
•Capillary Veins
What causes thread veins?
50% of the population will develop thread veins during their life. They are caused by a variety of factors including exposure to sun, wind and extremes in temperature. Steroid creams and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy may also induce them. In most cases, for genetic reasons some individuals are more prone to develop thread veins than others.

Realistically what can be done?
Thread veins are not dangerous and are asymptomatic (they have no adverse affect or feeling). So the first question to consider is whether they are a cosmetic problem. If you dislike their appearance and want to improve it then consideration must be given as to whether they are associated with varicose veins. If this is the case then the treatment results are better if the varicose veins are dealt with first.
FACEmed offers Sclerotherapy and Veinwave for the treatment of thread veins. These are the most successful treatments currently available, supported by medical research.
Some people may consider laser treatments. Research shows that laser treatment is less effective than microsclerotherapy. In a recent medical review in the Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin (the medical equivalent of 'Which' Magazine), it was concluded that microsclerotherapy was more effective than lasers and therefore it should be used in preference. |
